New Mexico State Park Series: Bottomless Lakes State Park
In July of 1936 the 8, small, natural fed lakes in south eastern New Mexico and the surrounding wetlands became the first New Mexico State Park. The lakes are surrounded by wetlands (when it isn’t a drought I imagine), bird and wild life viewing areas, a board walk, and scenic hikes and vistas galore.
New Mexico State Park Series: Storrie Lake State Park
Last summer, soon after pandemic started and I made my goal to visit all of the state parks in New Mexico, I found out that R’s dad made a daytrip to Storrie Lake State Park. Color me surprised! I guess I was wrong about him not being the outdoorsy type. He told her that it was a short drive (it’s about 2 hours from Albuquerque) and that they just sat by the lake in the lovely weather and read their books! My dad taught me to enjoy a lot of things about the outdoors but sitting by a lake or river or stream and reading a book is very high on my list of favorite outdoor activities.
New Mexico State Park Series: Santa Rosa Lake State Park
As a native Albuquerquean my mom and dad took my sibs and I to Santa Rosa Lake State Park at least once a summer. As an adult I’ve been to Santa Rosa, NM quite frequently. As people may or may not know I am a true dog lover and work with several rescue groups.
New Mexico State Park Series: Villanueva
Villanueva state park is about an hour and a half from Albuquerque if you take the east route on I-40 and about 2 hours if you take the north route on I-25. We took the east route on I-40 which is how the GPS told us to go. After we turned off from I-40 the road was very windy and curvy and we had to go pretty slow.
New Mexico State Park Series: Hyde Park
Hyde Memorial State Park is a tiny little park near Santa Fe. As we were following our GPS to get there, we thought for sure we were lost, as it was taking us through old Santa Fe. Eventually we got out of the neighborhood and back to a main road and found or way to the campground. The GPS was correct. The route to get there was just weird.
